🐾 Everything You Need to Know About Dobermans

All ServicesLoyal. Intelligent. Protective. The Perfect Family Companion.

Welcome to Tom’s Doberman Kennel! Whether you’re a first-time dog owner or an experienced dog lover, we understand that choosing the right dog is a big decision. Below, we’ve compiled the most important details you’ll need to know before adopting a Doberman from us. From their personality to their care needs, this guide is your one-stop resource.

Family-Friendly Companions

Dobermans are famously loyal and protective of their families. When raised in a loving home, they are affectionate and excellent with children. With early socialization, they can also get along well with other pets.

Guard Dogs and Protectors

Historically bred for protection and personal security, Dobermans are still one of the best watchdog breeds. While they’re naturally protective, they are not aggressive without cause. Their instincts can be honed with proper training to make them outstanding guard dogs.

Highly Intelligent and Trainable

Dobermans are highly intelligent and rank among the top 5 most trainable dog breeds. This makes them a great choice for families who want a dog they can train quickly for various activities (obedience, agility, protection, etc.)

Health Concerns & Genetic Testing

At Tom’s Doberman Kennel, we are committed to the health of our puppies. We conduct thorough genetic testing on both parents before breeding to minimize the risk of hereditary health issues. Common health concerns in Dobermans include:

  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM): A heart condition that can lead to heart failure.

  • Von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD): A bleeding disorder that can cause excessive bleeding.

  • Hip Dysplasia: A genetic condition affecting the hip joint that can cause discomfort or lameness.

Raising Your Doberman: A Long-Term Commitment

A Doberman is not just a pet, but a lifelong family member. As a breeder, Tom is committed to ensuring every dog placed with a family is cared for and loved. Here’s how you can help your Doberman thrive:

  • Training: Dobermans excel in obedience training. Regular, consistent training is important to foster a good relationship between you and your dog.

  • Socialization: Early socialization is crucial to avoid any fear or aggression issues. Expose your puppy to different environments, people, and other animals.

  • Exercise: A daily walk, run, or structured playtime is vital to keep your Doberman healthy and happy.

  • Veterinary Care: Regular vet checkups, vaccinations, and preventative care are essential to ensure your Doberman lives a long, healthy life.
